Review:

***** 5 out of 5 stars

City Of Bones is the first book in The Mortal Instruments series. It is about a fifteen year old girl called Clary Fray, she thinks she lives in a normal world where demons, vampires, werewolves, etc don't exist. Then she witnesses three teenagers, that no-one but her can see who happen to be Shadowhunter's, murder someone in a club who disappears into thin air, and is introduced into the Shadowhunter world. Her mother is kidnapped by her father who she thought was dead. The Shadowhunter's assist Clary & her best friend Simon in trying to find her mother, they are sent on a quest to retrieve the mortal cup which they can use as leverage to get her mother back. But they get betrayed by Hodge the Shadowhunter's tutor who gives Valentine (Clary's father) the cup and Jace (the Shadowhunter who Clary has fallen in love with). Then Clary goes on a mission to get Jace back, with the help of her mother's best friend Luke and his werewolf pack. When they find Valentine, they manage to rescue Clary's mother and Jace who we find out is actually Clary's older brother, but Valentine gets away with the mortal cup. Along the way they also make acquaintances with a Warlock, some Vampires and Werewolves.

I thought that this book was excellent, I like the fact there is a supernatural world hidden in plain sight in New York City, that there is a race of nephilm (half human, half angel) also known as Shadowhunters, that keep the mundane humans safe.  It like that there is references to angels, that have been mentioned in religious mythology not just made up names like some books, which shows the author made an effort to do research.

My favourite part of this book is Clary's birthday when Jace takes her up to the Greenhouse on the roof to see the flowers that only bloom at midnight, he gives her a witchlight stone, an apple and they share their first kiss. I like this part because the way the build up to the kiss and the kiss itself is described made it feel so romantic and magical. My favourite character is Luke Garroway, the head of the werewolf pack, because even though he seemed horrible at first telling Clary to stay away from him, and then telling Valentine's men that Clary and her mom mean nothing to him. When he finally explains everything to Clary about being a werewolf and how he has always cared for her mother, and then helps her rescue her mother and Jace, you realise he is a really decent guy who would do anything for Jocelyn (Clary's mother) and Clary herself.

Overall I thought this book was fantastic, I will immediately be continuing with the rest of the series. I would definitely be recommending this book to other people.
